Voice and Tone Tips
To create a comprehensive Voice and Tone guide, we must first establish a Brand Voice. This involves a more formal process, including market research, audience demographics analysis, and exploration of brand archetypes/personality traits. In the interim, here are some tips for crafting Tool Tip and Modal language:
- Use Clarity and Conciseness - Keep tooltips and notifications clear, concise, and to the point. Users should quickly understand the information presented. Minimize technical jargon and acronyms.
- Structure - Start with a short header. Then have text telling users why they are seeing a dialogue/tooltip (explanation). Then provide clear solutions and next steps if need be.
- Use Friendly Language - Aim for a friendly and approachable tone. Use language that makes users feel comfortable and welcomed.
- Align with User Intent - Match the tone with the user's intent and context. For example, error messages may need a more serious tone, while success messages can be more cheerful.
- Use Active Voice - Write tooltips and notifications in the active voice to make them more direct and engaging.
Examples:
- Header: Your Tax Identification Number is Locked Solution: Our team will review any changes you make to your tax identification number. (explanation) If you need to update it, please request a change.
- Header: You Do Not Have Access to Edit This Section Explanation: Our system pulls feed content directly from social media sources.
- Header: You Have 97 Internal Company Slots Left! Explanation: The Standard Plan has this limitation. You can upgrade for more internal slots by asking your Account Manager.
